Best Free Apps to Scan Documents on Android and iPhone

This guide compares reputable options using their current developer documentation checked in August 2026. Free plans and app features can change, so review the current app-store listing and the screen shown before subscribing. None of these apps can make a blurred, incomplete, or altered document valid. Always inspect the final pages before submitting them.

Quick comparison of the free choices

There is no universal winner. Choose the tool that fits where you already store files and how sensitive the document is. A student scanning class handouts has different needs from a business owner scanning invoices or a person handling identity records.

1. Google Drive for searchable scans in an existing Google workflow

Google Drive is the simplest cross-platform choice for people who already use a Google Account. Google's current Drive scanning guide covers both Android and iOS. It saves receipts, letters, and other pages as searchable PDFs in Drive.

On both platforms, the scanner can detect document edges, use automatic or manual capture, crop and rotate, apply colour or grayscale filters, clean marks, add pages, retake a page, and save into a selected Drive folder. The scanning feature is included with the Drive mobile app. A standard Google Account currently includes up to 15 GB of storage at no charge, shared across Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. A large archive of high-resolution scans can therefore affect email and photo storage too.

Choose Google Drive when:

• you already organise documents in Drive folders
• you want searchable PDFs without installing a dedicated scanner service

Choose Apple Notes or Files when:

3. Adobe Scan for free OCR and a PDF-focused workflow

Adobe Scan is useful when searchability is central. Adobe's current mobile scanner page describes free document capture, automatic edge detection, perspective correction, filters, multi-page PDFs, and optical character recognition. OCR adds a text layer so you can search a scan instead of treating every page only as a picture.

The app works on Android and iPhone. It can scan documents, forms, receipts, whiteboards, business cards, and existing document photos. Adobe's current FAQ says a free account includes 5 GB of Adobe cloud storage and advises waiting for the PDF to finish syncing before closing the app.

Be precise about the word free. Core scanning and OCR are free, but Adobe advertises advanced functions such as exporting to other file types, compressing PDFs, password protection, and deeper editing through paid Acrobat options. The interface may offer a trial or subscription when you tap one of those tools.

Choose Adobe Scan when:

• you need searchable text in a PDF
• you scan forms, receipts, or printed pages regularly
• you already review or sign PDFs in Acrobat
• you want automatic cleanup and document-specific capture modes

Adobe Scan is cloud-connected. Confirm that the scan appears in the intended Adobe account, especially if you have used email login, Google login, or Sign in with Apple at different times. Adobe notes that Apple's Hide My Email can create account confusion if you do not remember which identity you used.

OCR is not a guarantee of correct text. Names, totals, serial numbers, tables, and faint print can be misread. Search the PDF for a known phrase, but compare important extracted text with the page image before copying it into an application or accounting record.

4. Microsoft OneDrive for Microsoft account users

The OneDrive mobile app can scan documents, whiteboards, business cards, and photos, then save the result as a PDF. Microsoft maintains separate official instructions for OneDrive on Android and OneDrive on iPhone.

Both versions support capture, crop, rotation, filters, file naming, and multi-page PDFs. Current Microsoft documentation lists different multi-page limits: up to 10 pages or images in one Android scan and up to 30 on iOS. Treat these as current app limits, not permanent promises. If a long document approaches the limit, split it into clearly named parts and verify each PDF.

A free Microsoft account currently includes 5 GB of cloud storage shared across OneDrive-related Microsoft storage. Work and school accounts are governed by their organisation's quota, retention, and sharing policies.

Choose OneDrive when:

• your files already live in OneDrive or Microsoft 365
• you scan meeting whiteboards or business cards as well as paper
• you want the result available on a Windows computer
• your organisation requires storage in its managed Microsoft account

Microsoft Lens is not the recommendation here. Microsoft announced that the separate Lens app would be retired from iOS starting in January 2026 and unsupported after February 2026, with OneDrive named as an alternative. Use the supported scanner inside OneDrive rather than installing an old Lens package from an unofficial source.

5. Genius Scan Basic for local-first, unlimited scanning

Genius Scan stands out for people who want a dedicated scanner without mandatory cloud storage for every page. The developer's current Genius Scan pricing comparison says the Basic version is free, supports unlimited full-resolution scans without a watermark, and includes perspective correction, automatic capture, batch mode, enhancement, and multi-page PDF creation.

The developer also states that documents are processed and stored on the phone unless you explicitly export them. That local-first design can be useful for sensitive drafts or situations with unreliable internet. You still need a backup plan because losing or resetting the phone can remove locally stored scans.

The paid boundary is important. The current comparison places OCR, direct export to major cloud providers, PDF encryption, app locking, advanced organisation, automatic export, and Genius Cloud backup or sync in the paid Ultra tier. The free Basic edition can still share or export through ordinary supported device workflows, but it is not the choice if you require free OCR or automatic cloud filing.

Choose Genius Scan Basic when:

• you want unlimited scans without a watermark
• you prefer documents to remain on the phone until export
• you need fast batch capture and multi-page PDFs
• you do not require free OCR or automatic cloud sync

After scanning, export the important PDF to a destination you control and confirm it opens there. Do not assume the local app library is a durable archive.

6. Proton Drive for encrypted cloud storage

Proton Drive combines scanning with end-to-end encrypted cloud storage. Proton's current document scanner guide confirms support on Android and iOS. It says the app can access only the pages you choose to keep from the scanner, rather than the rest of your camera roll.

The scanner offers automatic or manual capture, multi-page review, retake, deletion, filters, rotation, and edge adjustment. Android also lists a tool for erasing marks or stains. Output differs by platform: Android can save PDF, JPEG, or both, while iOS currently saves PDF.

The Proton Free plan currently lists 5 GB of Drive storage. That is enough for many text PDFs but can fill with high-resolution scans and other files. The scanning guide does not promise free OCR, so do not choose it on the assumption that every scanned PDF will be searchable.

Choose Proton Drive when:

• encrypted cloud storage is more important than free OCR
• you already use a Proton Account
• you want scans uploaded directly into a chosen encrypted folder
• PDF-only output on iPhone is acceptable

End-to-end encryption protects storage and transfer within the designed system, but it does not correct weak account recovery, a compromised unlocked phone, or careless sharing. Use a strong account password, supported two-factor authentication, and a recovery method you can access.

7. Dropbox for scanning into an existing Dropbox folder

Searchable scan contents are another paid boundary. Dropbox documents full-text search for scanned documents under specified Professional and business plans, not Basic. The scanner still works on Basic, but do not expect a free personal account to index the words inside every scan.
