How to Create a UPI ID and Use It Safely in 2026

A UPI ID is a payment address connected to an eligible account in a supported UPI app. It lets someone send money without asking for your full bank account number and IFSC. It does not replace your bank account, and it is not the secret code that approves a payment.

That distinction matters. You can normally share a UPI ID when you want to receive money, but you must never share your UPI PIN. Entering the PIN authorizes an action involving your account. A request, QR code, or caller who claims you need a PIN to receive money should be treated as suspicious.

This guide explains how to prepare your phone, link an account, create or select a UPI ID, set the PIN through a supported method, and verify every payment. It also covers wrong transfers, unauthorized activity, a lost phone, complaints, and common scams. App menus and supported features change, so use the official instructions for your chosen app and bank whenever the screens differ.

Understand the four pieces before setup

UPI becomes easier to manage when you separate four things:

  • Bank account: The source or destination of funds.
  • UPI app: The application that connects you to UPI through participating banks and service providers.
  • UPI ID: The payment address, often written in a form such as name@handle.
  • UPI PIN: The confidential code used to authorize supported bank transactions.

NPCI describes UPI as an instant payment system built over IMPS and operated by NPCI, an RBI regulated entity. Its official UPI overview explains that one app may provide access to eligible accounts and that a virtual address reduces the need to share account details.

A UPI ID is also called a Virtual Payment Address or VPA. The part after the @ sign may identify a payment service provider rather than the bank where your savings account is held. That does not by itself mean the ID is wrong.

Your UPI PIN is not your phone unlock code, ATM PIN, app password, or OTP. NPCI’s UPI FAQs state that the PIN must not be shared and that bank or app customer support will not ask for it.

Check the prerequisites

For a typical smartphone setup, you need:

  • an active account with a bank or provider supported by the chosen UPI app
  • a mobile number registered with that account
  • the registered SIM active in the phone used for setup
  • permission and balance to send the verification SMS when required
  • a supported onboarding method offered by the app and bank
  • a secure phone with an updated operating system and screen lock

If the app cannot find the account, first confirm that the SIM’s mobile number matches the number registered with the bank. On a dual-SIM phone, choose the correct SIM for verification messages. Avoid trying random settings or sharing screenshots with strangers who claim they can activate the account.

If your bank-mobile link needs attention, use the Tutorils guide on linking a mobile number with a bank account safely as a preparation checklist. Complete any actual change through your bank’s official app, website, branch, ATM, or another channel the bank confirms.

Choose a supported UPI app

Install the app from the official Google Play or Apple App Store listing linked by the bank, NPCI, or the verified provider. Check the developer name, permissions, recent updates, privacy information, and support route. Do not install an APK sent through chat or a remote-support app suggested by an unknown caller.

You may use an official bank app, BHIM, or another participating app. Availability differs by bank and device. The NPCI BHIM page is a reliable starting point for BHIM features, while your bank’s official site should identify its own supported app.

One bank account may be usable in more than one UPI app, but each app may create its own UPI ID or handle. Start with one app, learn its transaction history and complaint controls, and add another only when you have a reason.

Tutorils has a separate walkthrough covering BHIM features for UPI payments. Recheck every screen against the current app because interface labels and services can change after publication.

Link the bank account

The exact labels differ, but the common process is:

  1. Open the verified UPI app.
  2. Register with the mobile number linked to your bank account.
  3. Allow the app to send the required verification message.
  4. Choose Bank account, Payment method, or a similar setup option.
  5. Select your bank from the supported list.
  6. Let the app retrieve eligible accounts connected to the verified mobile number.
  7. Choose the correct masked account after checking the bank name and final digits.

The app should not need your internet-banking password to discover a standard bank account through UPI. Stop if a person on a call asks you to read an OTP, share your screen, or install a tool so they can complete the process.

If no account appears, do not keep sending verification messages without understanding the problem. Check the registered number, selected SIM, outgoing SMS service, app permissions, bank support, and account status. Then use official in-app support or contact the bank.

Create or select the UPI ID

Some apps generate a default ID during registration. Others let you select from available handles or create another ID after the account is linked. Look under the selected bank account, profile, payment methods, or Manage UPI IDs.

Choose an ID that is easy to recognize but does not reveal more personal information than necessary. Avoid embedding a birth date, full address, account number, or another sensitive identifier. Availability and naming rules are controlled by the app and service provider.

Before sharing the ID, confirm which account it receives money into. If you link multiple accounts or create several IDs, write down the mapping in a private record. Remove or disable unused IDs through the app when that option is available.

Google Pay’s current official instructions for creating or finding a UPI ID illustrate how app-specific IDs are managed. Do not assume its menus, number of available IDs, or handles apply to another app.

Test the new ID with a small payment involving a trusted person only after setup is complete. Verify the credited account in the bank statement, not just through a message notification.

Set the UPI PIN using a supported method

The app and issuing bank decide which onboarding methods are available for your account. A common method uses eligible debit-card credentials requested within the secure UPI setup flow. Some bank and app combinations offer Aadhaar OTP-based onboarding. Newer approved authentication options may also appear where the bank, app, device, and current rules support them.

Google Pay’s official UPI PIN setup guidance currently lists debit card and Aadhaar where the bank allows Aadhaar onboarding. NPCI has also issued official material for additional authentication methods. Availability is not universal, so follow only the options displayed inside the verified app and confirmed by your bank.

During setup:

  1. Select the linked account.
  2. Choose Set UPI PIN, Create UPI PIN, or the equivalent.
  3. Select an onboarding method that your bank offers.
  4. Enter the requested details only inside the app’s protected payment flow.
  5. Complete bank verification.
  6. Create a PIN that is difficult for another person to guess.
  7. Confirm the PIN through the secure prompt.

Do not reuse a phone unlock code or a number printed on an identity document. Do not save the PIN in a chat, contact name, screenshot, or unprotected note. Never let another person watch the screen while you enter it.

If you already created a UPI PIN for the same bank account through another supported app, the app may ask you to use that existing PIN. A reset must follow the bank and app’s official flow. Customer support cannot safely set the PIN for you over a call.

Make a payment with a deliberate pause

Whether you enter a UPI ID, select a contact, scan a QR code, or open a merchant intent, use the same verification routine:

  1. Check that you intended to pay.
  2. Read the beneficiary name displayed by the app.
  3. Check the UPI ID or merchant identity where shown.
  4. Confirm the amount and payment note.
  5. Confirm the account that will be debited.
  6. Enter the PIN only after all details match.
  7. Wait for the final transaction status.
  8. Save the transaction reference when the payment matters.

NPCI strengthened beneficiary-name display requirements so participating apps show the bank-fetched ultimate beneficiary name on the pre-transaction screen. Treat that name as a critical check. If it does not match the intended person or merchant, cancel the payment and verify the details separately.

Do not let someone rush you because a queue is waiting or an offer will supposedly vanish. The few seconds used to read the name and amount are part of the payment process.

Handle collect requests safely

A collect request asks you to authorize money leaving your account. It is not proof that money is coming to you. Open a request only when you recognize the requester, amount, and purpose.

Before approving, check:

  • requester or merchant name
  • UPI ID
  • amount
  • note or invoice reference
  • expiry or mandate details if shown
  • bank account selected for debit

Reject an unexpected request. If a buyer, refund agent, courier, recruiter, or support caller says approving a request will credit money, stop the conversation. RBI’s Complaint Management System warns against responding to unknown “request money” prompts, and NPCI advises that a PIN is used to authorize payment, not to receive a normal transfer.

For subscriptions or mandates, read the amount, frequency, start condition, and cancellation route before approval. Review active mandates in the app periodically and cancel those you no longer recognize or need.

Use QR codes as payment instructions

Scanning a UPI QR code normally prepares a payment to the encoded recipient. It does not make the scanner receive money. NPCI’s fraud-awareness guidance specifically warns about QR codes sent with promises of rewards or refunds.

At a shop, check that the QR belongs to the merchant and has not been covered by another sticker. After scanning, compare the displayed beneficiary name with the shop or invoice. Enter the amount yourself when the QR does not contain a fixed amount.

For an image received online, verify the recipient through a separate trusted channel. Do not scan a QR from a stranger while following their instructions on a call. Do not install a screen-sharing or remote-access app to “help” with the scan.

If you want someone to pay you, share your own UPI ID or personal receive QR through a trusted channel. You do not need to enter a UPI PIN merely to receive an ordinary incoming payment.

Verify the transaction result

Do not judge a payment from a screenshot sent by the other party. Check your own app transaction history and bank statement. Status wording can vary, but the practical categories are success, pending or processing, and failed.

For success, confirm the amount, beneficiary, time, and reference. For pending, do not immediately pay again because a duplicate payment could result if the first completes. Use the app’s refresh or help option and follow the bank’s guidance. For failed with debit, retain the reference and raise the issue through the transaction’s in-app help or bank channel.

NPCI says UPI apps and participating banks provide transaction-history and grievance routes. Keep the UPI transaction ID, reference or RRN, bank statement entry, amount, date, and screenshots that do not expose your PIN or full account credentials.

Act quickly after a wrong transfer

A completed UPI payment cannot simply be stopped after authorization. If you paid the wrong person or merchant:

  1. Open the transaction and save its reference details.
  2. Contact the recipient or merchant through a verified channel and request return of the money.
  3. Report the issue through the app’s transaction help.
  4. Contact your bank using its official number or branch.
  5. Escalate through NPCI’s complaint route if the issue remains unresolved.

Google Pay’s official guide on an incorrect UPI transfer also states that a payment cannot be cancelled after PIN authorization and directs users to the recipient, bank, and dispute route. Recovery is not guaranteed. Do not threaten, publish personal details, or pay a supposed recovery agent.

If the transaction was unauthorized rather than mistaken, tell the bank that clearly and report it immediately through the bank’s official fraud channel. RBI’s customer-protection direction for unauthorized electronic transactions requires reporting channels and explains that liability can depend on the circumstances and reporting. Do not delay while waiting for social-media advice.

Respond to a lost phone or SIM

If the phone or SIM is lost:

  1. Use another phone to contact the mobile operator and block the SIM.
  2. Contact the bank and UPI app through verified channels.
  3. Use device-location and remote-lock features if already enabled.
  4. Change the app account password where applicable.
  5. Review bank and UPI transaction history for unknown activity.
  6. Report any unauthorized transaction to the bank immediately.
  7. Re-register only after the replacement SIM and device are secure.

NPCI advises blocking the mobile number after a phone loss. A PIN is still required for supported transactions, but that protection is not a reason to delay. A stolen unlocked phone may expose notifications, contacts, email, and other information useful to a fraudster.

Use the complaint ladder

Start with the transaction in the UPI app. Choose the relevant issue and save the ticket or complaint reference. Contact the account-holding bank if the app does not resolve the problem, especially for unauthorized activity, a wrong beneficiary, or a debit not properly reflected.

NPCI provides a complaint registration facility that routes complaints to relevant member banks or institutions. It states that fraudulent, unidentified, or unauthorized transactions should be raised with the bank for redressal.

If the regulated entity has not resolved an eligible complaint after you have first complained to it, review the RBI Integrated Ombudsman process and use the official RBI Complaint Management System when applicable. Eligibility and required waiting or response conditions should be checked on the current RBI portal rather than assumed from an old article.

Keep every reference number, response, bank statement, and date. Do not post full transaction evidence or account identifiers publicly to attract customer-support attention. Scammers monitor public complaints and may impersonate support staff.

Build safer everyday habits

Use a screen lock and current software. Review app permissions. Hide sensitive notifications on the lock screen. Keep the registered SIM under your control. Never share the UPI PIN, OTP, card PIN, or banking password. Use support links inside the verified app or the bank’s official site.

Tutorils has a focused guide on protecting UPI payments from scams and a broader checklist for protecting yourself from online payment scams. Use them to train family members who may receive fake refund, KYC, cashback, job, or customer-care messages.

Recheck current bank and app documentation before changing a PIN, SIM, phone, UPI ID, linked account, or mandate. Transaction limits, onboarding methods, supported account types, authentication choices, and complaint screens can vary and change.

A safe UPI routine is simple: use a verified app, link the correct account, protect the PIN, read the beneficiary name and amount, and treat every approval as money leaving the selected source unless the screen clearly states otherwise. The best time to notice an error is before authorization. The next best time is immediately afterward, with the reference details saved and the correct official complaint route open.

Frequently asked questions

Open a question to read the answer. Opening another answer closes the previous one.

What is the difference between a UPI ID and UPI PIN?

A UPI ID is a payment address that can be shared for receiving money. A UPI PIN is confidential and authorizes supported transactions from the linked account. Never share the PIN with a sender, merchant, or support representative.

Do I need a debit card to create a UPI PIN?

A debit card is a common onboarding method, but some supported bank and app combinations offer Aadhaar-based or other approved authentication. Use only the method shown inside the verified app and confirmed by your bank.

Can I create a UPI ID if my bank mobile number is different?

The app normally discovers eligible accounts using the mobile number verified from your SIM. If it differs from the number registered with the bank, update the bank record through an official channel before trying setup again.

Do I enter my UPI PIN to receive money?

No PIN is normally required to receive an ordinary UPI transfer. Entering a PIN authorizes a payment or other supported account action. Reject anyone who says a refund, prize, or incoming payment requires your PIN.

Is scanning a QR code required to receive a UPI payment?

No. Scanning a QR code usually prepares a payment to the encoded recipient. To receive money, share your verified UPI ID or personal receive QR through a trusted channel and confirm the credit in your own account.

How can I check whether a collect request is genuine?

Verify the requester name, UPI ID, amount, purpose, and any mandate details. Approve only a request you expected. A collect request authorizes money leaving your account, so reject unfamiliar requests and do not follow a caller's instructions.

Can I cancel a UPI payment sent to the wrong person?

A completed UPI payment cannot simply be cancelled after authorization. Save the reference, ask the verified recipient or merchant to return it, report the transaction in the app, and contact your bank. Recovery is not guaranteed.

What should I do if a failed UPI payment debited my account?

Open the transaction history, save the status and reference, and use the app's complaint option. Check the bank statement and contact the bank if the debit is not corrected. Avoid repeating the payment while its status remains uncertain.

What should I do if my UPI phone or SIM is lost?

Ask the mobile operator to block the SIM, contact the bank and app, remote-lock the device if possible, and review transactions. Report unauthorized activity to the bank immediately. Re-register only after the replacement SIM and device are secure.

Where should I complain about an unresolved UPI transaction?

Start with the transaction's in-app help and your bank. Keep every reference. Use NPCI's complaint facility if needed. For an eligible unresolved complaint against a regulated entity, review the current RBI Integrated Ombudsman requirements and CMS portal.
