How to Update Aadhaar Mobile Number Online and Offline

Check whether the UIDAI Aadhaar app supports your mobile update, when an authorised centre is required, and how to verify, track, and protect the request.

Updating the mobile number linked to Aadhaar is no longer a single-route process. UIDAI's current 2026 guidance allows eligible Aadhaar number holders to change an existing registered mobile number through the official Aadhaar app. However, the app does not cover every situation.

If you no longer have access to the old registered number, or you are registering a mobile number in Aadhaar for the first time, UIDAI directs you to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or authorised enrolment and update centre. Booking an appointment or locating a centre can be done online, but those actions do not complete the update.

This guide reflects UIDAI information checked on August 24, 2026. Aadhaar services can change, so reopen the linked UIDAI pages before submitting a request.

Quick answer: choose the correct route

Use the official Aadhaar app when all of these are true:

  • A mobile number is already registered with your Aadhaar.
  • You can complete the OTP checks required for your situation.
  • You can complete Face Authentication in the app.
  • The Mobile Number Update service is available in your current app version.

Visit an authorised centre when any of these is true:

  • No mobile number has ever been registered with your Aadhaar.
  • You have lost access to the old registered number.
  • The app cannot complete OTP or Face Authentication.
  • UIDAI directs your case to in-person service.

UIDAI's current Aadhaar app FAQ describes the eligible online scenarios and specifically sends first-time registration and no-access cases to a centre.

What the online route actually means

The online method is an update inside UIDAI's official Aadhaar app. It is not a form on an unofficial website, a request sent through social media, or a service an agent can complete remotely for you.

UIDAI's Updating Data on Aadhaar page was last updated on July 3, 2026 and lists Mobile Number Update among the current Aadhaar app services. It also explains how an Aadhaar number holder registers in the app by selecting a language, entering the Aadhaar number, accepting the terms and privacy policy, choosing the SIM, completing Face Authentication, and setting a six-digit PIN.

The app route still requires identity checks. Its availability does not mean anyone with an Aadhaar number can replace the registered mobile number without access controls.

Prepare before using the Aadhaar app

Check these items first:

  1. Install or update the official Aadhaar app using the store links provided on UIDAI's website.
  2. Keep the phone's active SIM available for the app registration process.
  3. Make sure the new number can receive an OTP.
  4. If the app requires the old registered number for your scenario, make sure that number can also receive an OTP.
  5. Use a stable connection and enough light for Face Authentication.
  6. Keep payment access ready for the prescribed charge shown in the official app.

Do not rely on an old screenshot or third-party tutorial to identify the app. Start from UIDAI's website and follow its current store link. Check the developer or publisher information in the store before installing.

UIDAI describes two app scenarios for an existing registered mobile number. The first applies when the app is registered using the same mobile number already recorded in Aadhaar. The second applies when the app is registered using a different mobile number. The verification requirements are not identical.

Update through the Aadhaar app when eligible

The exact labels may change with an app release, so use the current UIDAI instructions and read each screen before continuing.

1. Register securely in the official app

Open the official Aadhaar app and follow UIDAI's registration flow. Enter your own Aadhaar number, choose the SIM as requested, complete Face Authentication, and create a PIN that you do not reuse or share.

Do not let a shop, agent, or another person set the PIN. The person helping you should never retain your Aadhaar number, face image, OTP, or app access.

2. Open Mobile Number Update

After registration, open the services area and select Mobile Number Update. Read the number shown and the verification instructions before requesting an OTP.

Do not continue if the page asks for unrelated banking credentials, card PINs, UPI PINs, remote-screen access, or payment outside UIDAI's normal flow. Close the app and confirm the route through UIDAI if anything looks wrong.

3. Complete the OTP checks for your scenario

According to UIDAI's mobile-number update FAQ:

  • If the app uses the same mobile number that is currently registered with Aadhaar, verify the new mobile number with OTP, complete Face Authentication, and pay the prescribed charge.
  • If the app uses a different mobile number from the one currently registered with Aadhaar, verify both the old registered number and the new number with OTP, complete Face Authentication, and pay the prescribed charge.

Enter each OTP only in the official app screen that you initiated. An OTP should not be read to a caller or forwarded in a message.

4. Review the new number carefully

Before submission, compare every digit with the number you intend to register. A typing error can move future OTPs and notifications to the wrong number or force another update request.

Read the confirmation screen rather than assuming the copied number is correct. If the app masks some digits, confirm the visible digits and any preceding review screen.

5. Complete Face Authentication and payment

Follow the official on-screen instructions for Face Authentication. Use even lighting, keep the camera steady, and remove anything that prevents a clear capture when the app asks.

Pay only the charge displayed by UIDAI's official service. Charges and concessions can change, so this guide does not replace the live fee screen. UIDAI maintains an Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Charges page for current notices.

6. Save the acknowledgement

Do not close the process until the app confirms that the request was received. Save the acknowledgement, invoice, or reference number supplied by the official service. Store it privately rather than posting a screenshot publicly.

The Aadhaar app includes a Track My Request service. Use the reference supplied for the request and the official tracking option shown in the app.

When you must use the offline route

UIDAI requires an in-person visit if the mobile number is being registered for the first time. It also requires a centre visit when you do not have access to the old registered number.

The old number is not needed for the centre route. UIDAI's Aadhaar update FAQ states that no old mobile number or supporting document is required for the mobile-number update. Physical presence is still necessary because the centre authenticates the Aadhaar holder.

Do not confuse this with updating other fields during the same visit. Name, address, date of birth, or other changes can have their own document requirements. Ask for only the mobile-number update unless you are prepared for the rules that apply to the additional field.

Locate an authorised centre

Use UIDAI's centre information rather than a general map result. UIDAI's centre-locator guidance directs residents to the Bhuvan Aadhaar Portal, where centres can be searched by nearby location or PIN code.

Check the services shown for a centre before travelling. Not every location necessarily offers every update service at all times. Save the centre name and address, and recheck opening information close to the visit.

The Tutorils guide to updating Aadhaar details online explains related update categories, but use the current UIDAI route described here for a mobile-number change.

Book an appointment when available

An appointment can reduce uncertainty about the visit, but it does not replace the in-person update. UIDAI's Aadhaar Seva Kendra page says UIDAI-run Aadhaar Seva Kendras use an online appointment system. It links to bookappointment.uidai.gov.in and states that the appointment-booking service does not require an Aadhaar-registered mobile number.

Choose Aadhaar Update and the correct centre, date, and slot. Use a mobile number you can access for the booking OTP and appointment message. The booking number does not itself become the new Aadhaar-registered number.

Some authorised centres may handle walk-ins or use another queue arrangement. Confirm the location's current method before travelling.

What happens at the centre

Have your Aadhaar number available and tell the operator that you want to register or update the mobile number. UIDAI says no supporting document or old mobile number is required for this specific change.

At the centre:

  1. Complete the update request as directed.
  2. Give your own new mobile number, not the operator's or an agent's number.
  3. Watch the screen and check every entered digit.
  4. Complete the biometric authentication or sign-off required by the official process.
  5. Pay only the applicable official charge displayed by the centre.
  6. Collect the acknowledgement receipt before leaving.

UIDAI's update-process page says the operator enters the requested data, the Aadhaar holder receives an acknowledgement with an Enrolment ID, and the operator provides biometric sign-off for the update request.

The update form itself should not attract a separate charge. Keep the receipt because it records the request and applicable charge. If the operator entered a wrong digit, point it out before final confirmation rather than waiting for processing.

Documents, biometrics, and receipts

For a mobile-number-only update at a centre, UIDAI says no supporting document and no old mobile number are required. This does not remove the need to identify the Aadhaar record and authenticate the person making the request.

The centre may use fingerprints, iris, face, or another UIDAI-approved authentication step appropriate to its current process. Follow the operator's official instructions, but do not hand over original documents that are unrelated to the mobile-number request.

If you combine mobile update with another demographic or biometric change, the requirements and charge can differ. Ask the operator to explain each selected field before you approve the request.

Your acknowledgement is evidence that a request was submitted, not proof that UIDAI accepted the update. UIDAI states that update requests remain subject to verification and validation.

Track the request

For an app request, use Track My Request and the reference supplied by the app. For a centre request, keep the acknowledgement and use the EID or update reference in UIDAI's official Check Aadhaar Status service.

UIDAI says an Aadhaar update can take up to 90 days and cannot be expedited through a separate shortcut. If a request remains in process beyond that period, call UIDAI's toll-free number 1947 using the acknowledgement details.

For a mobile-number update alone, UIDAI says it does not send a new Aadhaar letter. A notification is sent to the provided mobile number or email as applicable. Do not treat the absence of a new paper letter as a failed update.

Once the update is shown as complete, test an official OTP-based Aadhaar service when you genuinely need it. Do not request repeated OTPs merely to experiment, and never share the OTP.

Safety and scam avoidance

Use only uidai.gov.in, myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in, the appointment subdomain linked by UIDAI, and app-store links published on the UIDAI site. A similar-looking domain or app icon is not enough.

Follow these rules:

  • Never share an Aadhaar OTP, app PIN, bank PIN, card PIN, or UPI PIN.
  • Do not install remote-access software for an Aadhaar update.
  • Do not send an Aadhaar image or acknowledgement into a public chat.
  • Do not allow an operator or agent to register their number against your Aadhaar.
  • Keep the receipt and compare the charged amount with UIDAI's current notice.
  • Use UIDAI's 1947 helpline for doubts, rejection, overcharging, or suspicious behaviour.

UIDAI's grievance guidance lists phone, web, email, chat, post, walk-in, and other official complaint channels. Start there rather than paying someone who claims they can accelerate approval.

When storing an acknowledgement or e-Aadhaar, keep it in a protected folder. The Tutorils guide to sharing government documents safely covers masking, recipient checks, and secure storage. You can also review how to store Aadhaar and certificates in DigiLocker.

Special cases

No old number or no number registered

Go to an authorised centre. UIDAI does not permit first-time mobile registration through the Aadhaar app, and the no-access scenario is also routed to a centre.

App registered with a different number

UIDAI requires OTP verification of both the old Aadhaar-registered number and the new number, followed by Face Authentication and the prescribed charge. If you cannot receive the old OTP, use the centre route.

International mobile number

UIDAI's current Aadhaar FAQ says an international mobile number can be entered, but messages are not delivered to international or non-Indian mobile numbers. Consider how that limitation affects OTP-based services before choosing the number, and confirm the current rule with UIDAI.

Difficulty with biometric capture

Tell the authorised operator. UIDAI provides procedures for biometric exceptions and difficult fingerprint capture. Do not pay an outside agent to bypass authentication. Call 1947 if the centre cannot explain the official next step.

PAN and Aadhaar use different numbers or details

A mobile update does not automatically correct a name, date-of-birth, or PAN linking mismatch. The Tutorils guide to PAN and Aadhaar linking problems explains those separate checks.

Postman route mentioned by UIDAI

Some UIDAI FAQ pages mention mobile update through a postman. Operational availability and procedure can vary, and the new app guidance does not explain that route in detail. Confirm availability through 1947 or the relevant authorised postal service before relying on it.

Troubleshooting

If the app does not show Mobile Number Update, first confirm that you installed the current official Aadhaar app rather than the older mAadhaar app. Update it through the store link on UIDAI's website. If the service remains unavailable, check UIDAI's current FAQ or use an authorised centre.

If an OTP does not arrive, confirm the number, SIM service, signal, and message filtering. Do not make repeated rapid requests. If the old registered number is no longer accessible, stop the app route and visit a centre.

If Face Authentication fails, improve lighting, clean the camera, follow the app's positioning instructions, and retry only as allowed. Persistent failure is a reason to use the in-person route, not a reason to share credentials.

If payment succeeds but no acknowledgement appears, do not immediately pay again. Save the transaction evidence and contact UIDAI through 1947 or its official grievance channel.

If the centre cannot provide mobile update, use the Bhuvan service details to find another authorised location. Do not substitute a shop that is not shown as an authorised centre.

If the request is rejected, keep the acknowledgement and contact UIDAI. Submission does not guarantee acceptance. Ask for the recorded reason and follow the official correction or grievance route rather than filing repeated identical requests without understanding the failure.

Recheck the process before future updates

The Aadhaar app introduced an online mobile update route that older UIDAI FAQs and older tutorials may not reflect. This is a good example of why a saved checklist should not be treated as permanent.

Before any future update:

  1. Open UIDAI's Updating Data on Aadhaar page.
  2. Check the current Aadhaar app FAQ for eligibility scenarios.
  3. Check the current charges page.
  4. Confirm the centre or appointment link from UIDAI.
  5. Save the current acknowledgement and tracking route.

The safest method is the route UIDAI currently supports for your exact situation. Use the app when you can satisfy its identity checks. Use an authorised centre for first registration, lost old-number access, or a failed app route. In both cases, verify the number, keep the receipt, track the request, and protect every OTP and reference number.
